The Department of National Defence owns two arenas at the Nameo Airforce Base just North of Edmonton. The aging arenas utilized ammonia based refrigeration systems which did not meet all code requirements and provided safety and health challenges with regard to the operational maintenance of the two systems. DND hired Revolve Engineering Inc. to propose and design a new alternative energy system to provide the refrigeration for both arenas. Several options were considered in the feasibility phase and DND decided to install a heat pump based refrigeration plant which will not only reduce the energy consumption of the system, but also drastically reduce the maintenance and operation costs.
The new heat pump refrigeration plant is expected to save 15-20% per year on energy costs and over $80,000 per year in maintenance. In addition, because the heat pump plants do not use ammonia, expensive upgrades to the mechanical rooms are no longer required (to meet code).
